18th Annual Pike Vegas Weekend Wrap-Up03/13/2000 Big changes were in the wind this year for the 18th Annual Pike Super Bowl Weekend. Renamed the 18th Annual Pike Championship Weekend, it moved for the first time ever to the weekend prior to the Super Bowl. The change was made with the ideas that Vegas would be less crowded on NFC/AFC Championship Weekend opening up better golf availability and a preference of viewing two games on Sunday instead of one. About 34 guys, the majority of them Pike alums from the late 70's and early 80's attended this year's reunion and gave a positive review to the date change.
Friday and Saturday were both golf days with as many as 32 golfers on Saturday for the actual Pike Scramble. As he has done every year, Lou Tavano organized golf and for that we are all appreciative. The victorious team of Brian Murphy, Steve Spackeen, Mike Cronin and Glenn "Wink" Williams finished a net -12 under. Golfer of the year award stayed in the same group as the big fella, Wink Williams, walked away with the coveted black dinner jacket graciously donated years ago by the sometimes-stylish John "Weeb" Bunch. (On a side note, Weeb ties the knot to his new bride Kelley on April 7th)
Saturday night included a return to Yolie's Brazilian Steakhouse where Jim Roslund continued his attempt to entertain attendees, as he did all weekend, with his various Duck Call instruments. Word has it he actually landed a few ducks in one of the lakes on the golf course (Good business success sometimes effects people in different ways). Mike "Alf" Jordan and Mike Taggott schedules precluded their earlier arrival but they still made it to Vegas in time for dinner and Sunday's festivities. This typifies what's right about this weekend- Everyone continues to make the effort to participate demonstrating the value all of us place upon these lifelong friendships.
Chairman Adam Karon, who finished the second year of his five year commitment, promises more changes in Year 2001. An upgraded venue is his focus for the 19th Annual because the group has expressed concerns that the luxurious Imperial Palace has grown tired. Of course, over the years hotels have never been a critical component for this group of Pikes. In fact, the majority of hotels involved in past reunions have been blown up: The Dunes, The Hacienda, The Aladdin, with The Frontier scheduled for future demolition. But the friendships remain intact. |
